Fall 2023 UConn ECE Animal Science Workshop

On Tuesday, November 14th, UConn Early College Experience, and the UConn ECE Faculty Coordinators for Animal Science, Drs. Amy Safran and Jen Nadeau met with certified ECE Animal Science Instructors for their annual professional development workshop. After introductions, Dr. Safran went over guidelines for all ECE Instructors including sample syllabi with course descriptions, philosophy, required texts, and grading policies. Later the group participated in a discussion about their courses and ideas for future professional development meetings. After lunch, they were able to get hands on experience in a Horse Science lab on equine myofascial release therapy with Cathleen Peabody, a professional equine therapist.

On Thursday, February 16th  UConn Early College Experience, and the UConn ECE Faculty Coordinators for Animal Science, Dr. Jen Nadeau and Dr. Amy Safran met with certified Animal Science Instructors for their annual professional development conference.

Instructors met for a tour of UConn’s animal facilities including the voluntary milking system. Later, Drs. Safran and Nadeau went over guidelines for all ECE instructors including sample syllabi with course description and philosophy, required books, and course specific grading policies. The group discussed their courses and possible topics for future workshops before observing a UConn section of ANSC 1676: Introduction to Companion Animals where Molly Riser, UConn ANSC PhD student provided an overview of the domestication and breeding of dogs.

On Thursday, March 24th UConn Early College Experience, and the UConn ECE Faculty Coordinators for Animal Science, Dr. Jen Nadeau and Dr. Amy Safran met with certified Animal Science Instructors for their annual professional development conference.

Drs. Safran and Nadeau went over guidelines for all ECE instructors including sample syllabi with course descriptions and philosophy, required books, and grading policies. The group also discussed how their courses are going this year before a short break and then visited an ANSC 1602 Behavior and Training of Domestic Animals course where they heard from a representative from Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

On Wednesday, April 28th UConn Early College Experience and the UConn ECE Faculty Coordinators for Animal Science, Dr. Jenifer Nadeau and Dr. Amy Safran met with certified Animal Science Instructors for their annual professional development workshop. Drs. Safran and Nadeau went over guidelines for all ECE instructors including sample syllabi with course description and philosophy, required books, and grading policies. The group also discussed and shared helpful resources used in their classrooms. Later, Violet Jiménez Sims, Ed.D., Associate Director of Teacher Education (School-University Partnerships), UConn, met with instructors and spoke about “Including Diversity via Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching”.

Animal Science Professional Development Workshop

Our certified Animal Science instructors along with Faculty Coordinators Dr. Jenifer Nadeu and Dr. Amy Safran met with Dr. Julia Wilkinson from Tufts Veterinary Field Service to learn about equine aging and dentistry in a hands on science lab. The group of 12 certified animal science instructors were able to tour the horse barns and observe Dr. Wilkinson floating a horse’s teeth.  This routine procedure involves filing a horse’s teeth to make the chewing surfaces relatively flat or smooth as a part of overall equine health.
