ENGR 1195: Special Topics in Engineering: AI Literacy (AI for All)
Two credits (no course fee). Offered Fall or Spring.
Introduction to generative AI as a practical tool for learning, creativity, and problem-solving in academic and professional contexts. Students work hands-on with modern AI systems, developing skills in prompt engineering, critical evaluation of AI outputs, and maintaining human judgment in AI-assisted workflows. The course focuses on accessibility and personalization to help students build AI workflows that support their learning and personal development through interactive labs, case studies, and reflection. Encourages sustainable AI use habits and covers ethical considerations including privacy, bias, transparency, and truthfulness in AI use. Emphasizes responsible AI use for personal growth and societal benefit.
Eligibility Guidelines: Successful completion of two years of high school STEM and Humanities coursework is recommended.
Instructor Certification Requirements:
The preferred degree requirements for instructors wishing to teach UConn ECE AI Literacy are as follows. Minimally, applicants will hold a master’s degree in their content area or in Education with demonstrated previous experience supporting digital literacy, ethical conversations and incorporating technology in the classroom. Applicants who have experience in computer science, programming, or AI and/or the integration of technology in the classroom may be best situated to demonstrate proficiency with AI workflows and learning models and engage in collegiate level dialogue regarding the technology's societal impact, critical thinking about AI, and novel application.

This course can exist in STEM, humanities and CTE departments inclusive of those course offerings delivered by educators who hold #062, School Library Media Specialist, certification.
For this course, the first year of certification is provisional, and the UConn faculty coordinator will mentor the UConn ECE Instructor and oversee implementation of the syllabus and instruction. Full certification is dependent upon an instructors’ successful first year of teaching the course as determined by the ECE faculty coordinator for ENGR 1195.
