COMM 1000: The Process of Communication

Three credits ($150). Offered Fall, Spring, or Full-year.

A study of modern communication theories and principles useful in understanding how you affect and are affected by others through communication. Methods to develop your communication skills, the role of technology and media in various aspects of daily life.

Eligibility Guidelines: Successful completion of at least one year of a high school social studies course, two years of English/Language or instructor consent is recommended.

COMM 1100: Principles of Public Speaking

Three credits ($150). Offered Fall, Spring, or Full-year.

Theory and performance in public speaking: methods for organizing presentation and delivery skills, overcoming anxiety of speaking in public; audience analysis; maximizing message impact; professional presentation skills; evidence; listening and speech evaluation.

Eligibility Guidelines: Successful completion of at least one year of a high school social studies course, two years of English/Language or instructor consent is recommended.

Instructor Certification Requirements:

The preferred degree requirement for instructors wishing to teach UConn Communication courses through Early College Experience is a Master’s degree in Communication and three years of Communication teaching experience or related teaching experience at the high school level.

The minimum degree requirement for instructors seeking Communication certification is a Bachelor’s degree in Communication or related social science field (such as, but not limited to Psychology, Sociology, Political Science) and a conferred Master’s degree in Education or a related field. Successful completion of three graduate level Communication courses from an accredited college or University, and three years of Communication teaching experience or related teaching experience at the high school level is also required.

All newly approved Instructors will be certified on a first year provisional basis and required to audit UConn’s Comm 1000 and/or 1100 course(s) before their first year of teaching. Pending recommendation by the Faculty Coordinator, certification can be updated from provisional to full status at the end of the academic year.
