PHRX 1002: Fundamentals of Pharmacology
Two credits ($100). Offered Fall, Spring, or Full-year.
Pharmacists, physicians, veterinarians, dentists, physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, and others either prescribe drugs, recommend drug therapy, or manage patients who are using drug products. This course is designed to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts of pharmacology, regardless of the health profession they are interested in. The content empowers students to identify how drugs are formulated, how they work in the body, some of the main drug classes, and the main drugs within those classes. The course ties biology, anatomy, and chemistry together to show students how it is applied in the real world.
Eligibility Guidelines: Successful completion of high school biology, chemistry or UConn AH 2001 (medical terminology) is recommended.
PHRX 3057: Discovering the Leader Within
One credit ($50). Offered Fall, Spring, or Full-year.
Students will gain an understanding of personal and small group leadership and participate in activities focused on its content. Learn about habits of highly effective people, grit, small talk, conflict resolution, elevator pitches, and strategic plans. Self-discovery discussion posts, in-class discussions, student video roll play allow students to apply these techniques to their lives today and learn how it can be used in the future. Applications to “Fundamental of Pharmacology” course and any course dealing with business and management. Culminates with an optional discussion with a UConn leadership expert.
Eligibility Guidelines: Successful completion of at least two years of high school social studies, English and science coursework is recommended.
Instructor Certification Requirements:
The minimum degree requirement for instructors wishing to teach UConn Early College Experience Pharmacy courses can be met through the following options.
Preferred applicants for the PHRX 1002 course will have a master’s degree in Pharmaceutical, Biological, or Health Sciences, or have successfully completed relevant graduate coursework in a closely related Health Science field as determined by UConn’s School of Pharmacy faculty.
Option 1: A Pharmaceutical, Biological, or Health Sciences BS/MS; or
Option 2: A Master’s degree in Education with a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biological Science, Health Science, or a closely related field; and hold a CT teaching certification endorsed for either #030 (Biology, 4-12) or #031 (Chemistry, 4-12); or
Option 3: A CT certified teacher in a biomedical program who holds either #103/#109 (Health Occupations) and is a licensed health care provider (EMT, paramedic, certified pharmacy technician) or has equivalent work experiences in science/health related with recommendations.
Applications for PHRX 3057 can meet any of the criteria specified above but will take into account candidates who hold a CT teaching certification endorsed for either #015 (English, 4-12) or #026 (History & Social Studies, 4-12) and hold a Master’s in Education. Please note approval to teach PHRX 3057 may not lead to approval to teach additional course offerings without sufficient pharmaceutical science and/or health sciences coursework as determined by the ECE Faculty Coordinator for PHRX.
Certified instructors will work closely with the School of Pharmacy faculty to offer these classes, and full recorded content is available to support high school instructors if needed. Activities will come from the School of Pharmacy faculty but can be supplemented with instructor created activities, quizzes, tests, and content.
