ME 3295: Special Topics in Mechanical Engineering

Three credits ($150). Offered Fall, Spring, or Full-year.

These special topics sections offer courses in Industrial Design, with an (a) SolidWorks options or (b) AutoCAD option.

Basic computer-aided design (CAD) is introduced. Isometric, orthogonal views, sections and parametric modeling strategies, including advanced modeling techniques. First and third angle projections. Notions of measuring, tolerances and manufacturing techniques associated by hand and CAD modeling. General manufacturing processes and their relation to modeling individual parts and assemblies. CNC principles, GCODE.  

Eligibility Guidelines: Successful completion of two years of high school mathematics is required. 


Instructor Certification Requirements:

The preferred degree requirements for instructors wishing to teach UConn ECE SolidWorks & AutoCAD courses are as follows. Minimally applicants will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Engineering, Education Technology, or a closely related field. Preferred applicants will have a Master of Fine Arts, Engineering or Master’s Degree in Technology/Engineering Education and hold a teaching certification endorsed for #047 Technology Education, PK-12. 

Instructors applying for SolidWorks must submit a portfolio of work samples which demonstrates: 

  • Show literacy in SolidWorks (does not have to be the latest version). 
  • Show at least two examples of 3D modeling and two examples of a Drawing done based on those two examples. The drawings are to include at least two orthographic views, one isometric view, and a Title Block. 

Instructors applying for AutoCAD must submit a portfolio of work samples which demonstrates: 

  • Show literacy in AutoCAD (does not have to be the latest version). 
  • Show at least two examples of drafting using AutoCAD.
