Instructor Responsibilities

The most important responsibility a UConn ECE Instructor has is to teach the UConn course while adhering to the standards set by NACEP and the University’s discipline-specific academic department. Instructors must also complete the following administrative tasks each semester for each UConn course that they teach.

Course Syllabi Creation and Collection

A UConn ECE Instructor’s syllabus is a vital tool that sets the expectations for the course. It is also a tool your students will need when transferring their UConn credits to other universities. It is the cultural norm in college to provide a syllabus to your students, and it is a requirement of the University. When a student attempts to transfer credit earned through UConn ECE to another university, the “receiving institution” will require the syllabus (along with a copy of the student’s transcript) to fully understand the nature of your course — the content that was covered, the means of assessing mastery of the content, and the materials that were used. Every student taking your UConn course must receive a syllabus and understand that they will be held to the standards written in the document.

A UConn syllabus should include the following information:

  • Designate that this is a UConn course for UConn credit
  • Course number & title (e.g., POLS 1202: Introduction to Comparative Politics)
  • Instructor’s name (e.g., Dr. Boecherer)
  • Location of the course (e.g., Norwich Free Academy)
  • Year & semester (e.g., Spring, 2019)
  • UConn course description found in the UConn ECE Course Catalog
  • Course objectives (one paragraph)
  • Required textbook and materials
  • Grading Policy (assessments, their percentage value, and any grading differences between UConn grade and the high school grade)
  • Course Information (materials and topics to be covered)
  • Course Policies (e.g., academic integrity, participation, final exam policy)

Some University academic departments may require additional course materials. Only the following instructors must submit these additional materials:

  • Biology Instructors: A course syllabus and pacing guide for the course lecture and lab
  • English Instructors: A course syllabus, schedule, and sample assignments must be submitted on the ECE English page.
  • HDFS Instructors: A course syllabus, curriculum map, and one student assessment
  • Mathematics Instructors: A course syllabus must include a list of sections in a schedule format with their respective titles as demonstrated on the Math Sample Syllabus.

Need further help with your syllabus design? More information on how to develop a syllabus can be found on the Syllabus Design page.

UConn ECE collects your syllabus every semester that you teach a UConn course. We distribute your syllabus to your UConn ECE Faculty Coordinator and also keep it on file in case a university requests it for student credit transfer purposes. Remember, only syllabi for UConn courses will be accepted. Please omit references to Advanced Placement. Courses that are taught in sequence cannot appear on the same syllabus. Please submit one syllabus per course.

Syllabus Submission Period

Fall and Full-Year courses: August 20 – October 1
Spring courses: January 7 – February 15

Create a College Environment

Syllabus dissemination is an important step in helping your students understand that they are in a UConn course and what is expected of them. UConn ECE Instructors are encouraged to show their students the "Welcome to UConn ECE" video at the beginning of their UConn course to help students better understand the benefits, expectations, and the rigor of their UConn course. Concurrent enrollment partnerships provide high school students the opportunity to take college credit-bearing courses. Collegial Interaction is key to this partnership and Instructors are invited to bring their class for a campus visit or participate in UConn ECE sponsored events. UConn ECE logos and proud partner badges can also be used on electronic and printed materials.

Review Class Rosters

It is the Instructor's responsibility to review their class rosters and make sure there are no discrepancies between what is listed in the Student Administration System (SAS) and the students in your classroom. Class rosters should be monitored throughout the entire registration process by being printed from SAS and checked over with the students in your classroom. As discrepancies appear, instruct each incorrectly enrolled student to log into UConn.DualEnroll.com to update their class schedule. All changes to student schedules must be made online by the students by the end of the Fall registration period on October 20th.

Reviewing Class Rosters in SA Instructions

We will send your Site Representative a finalized copy of student enrollments the week of October 30th for your final review and confirmation of your class list. Any errors or corrections should be marked on the rosters for office review. Rosters DO NOT need to be printed, signed, and sent to us this year as we are collecting them electronically. All notations will be made in the Excel document we send to your school and sent back to us via e-mail to ece@uconn.edu by November 10, 2023.

Support Course Evaluations

UConn ECE is dedicated to supporting and enhancing teaching effectiveness and student learning using course evaluations. Course evaluations are conducted at the end of each semester using an online system and are used only for formative purposes. Students are asked to evaluate the course, not the Instructor, and the individual results are only sent to the course instructor*. Principals and other administrators do not receive individual instructor results. Faculty Coordinators receive aggregate results of an entire course, i.e., all the results for ENGL1007.

Students receive e-mail invitations sent to their personal addresses to complete the surveys — one e-mail invitation for each course they take. If a student did not receive a survey, please reach out to the UConn ECE Program Office.

For best results, we recommend that Instructors make time in class to allow students to complete course evaluations.

Fall course evaluations period: January 2 – January 31, 2024

Instructors will receive results at the end of March.

Full-Year and Spring course evaluation period: May 1 – May 31, 2024

Instructors will receive results at the end of June.

*in compliance with UConn's SET evaluations, results reports are only sent to instructors with classes that had 5 or more students enrolled and when there were 3 or more respondents.
