Annual Cardboard Boat Race at Avery Point

Presented by the UConn Avery Point Associated Student Government & the Office of Early College Programs/ UConn Early College Experience.

Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at the Avery Point Campus/ Eastern Point Beach

The deadline to register your team is May 11, 2018. 

Welcome to the beautiful UConn Avery Point Campus! The day will run 9:30am-2:00pm. We will all gather on the lawn of the Branford house and we will be welcomed by the Director of the UConn Avery Point campus Dr. Annemarie Seifert and the UConn ECE Executive Director Brian Boecherer. The program will start with talks from the faculty, continue to lunch and commence with the races. One winner will emerge and race against the UConn undergraduate team! If you would like to explore the campus, small group tours are available at the Welcome Center. Instructors, please contact the UConn ECE office with a final count of attendees by September 9.

Awards & Details

In addition to the coveted Cardboard Boat Race Cardboard Trophy, we also have four new awards this year: School Spirit Award (most enthusiastic high school), Best Dressed Team Award (most creatively dressed), “Out of the Box” Award (most creative boat design and construction), and Best Boat Name Award (most unique and creative boat name).  Rules and information: 

  • PFD’s are required for all students in boats. Limited PFDs are available so this year teams are required to bring their own PFDs.
  • All boats must be made of just cardboard and duct tape (a starter kit will be provided by the UConn ECE office).
  • You may decorate the boat with paint, but none may appear on the bottom 6 inches of the boat.
  • Boats must float with at least one person aboard and unassisted from the shore.
  • Kayak paddles may be used during the race. Paddles may be available at the race.

Lifeguards will be present to assist boaters. We will be taking pictures throughout the day, please let the staff know if there are any attendees that do not have a waiver for this or if this can be added to the permission slips.

9:00 — 9:15 Buses drop off boats at Eastern Point Beach beach and students at library. Buses return to beach to park.

9:30 Welcome/ Branford House lawn

10:15 Lunch/ Branford House (ECE provided)

11:45 — 12:00 Final prep of boats and teams

Arriving by Bus

Bus drop off in the morning:
Buses will enter Avery Point and take the first right for the boats to be dropped off. The buses will then travel around the loop and drop everyone off at the Library. Buses will have to park off campus at the overflow lot across from Shennecossett Yach Club. Any bus driver that will be here for the day is welcome to join us on campus for the day. Please let me know if they will so that I can make sure they are included in lunch. There will be a staff member in the morning available to assist in directing the buses.

Bus pick up after the race:
You will have the bus driver's number and will be able to call the bus to campus. Please see an ECE staff member before doing so as we do have to limit the buses coming in for pick up all at once. The spot for pick up the bus stop across from the gym near the flag pole and we will have a staff member there to also had you the goodie bags for everyone, we will have these boxed up for you.


Arriving by personal vehicle

If you park in a visitor spot, you must PayByPhone ($3/day paid by you). You may pre-arrange for free parking in lot A by filling out this web form. If you park in any other spot, you may be ticketed.
