On October 2, 2014 about 60 UConn Early College Experience students from six different high schools enrolled in Marine Science and Maritime Studies courses around the state participated on the 4th Annual Avery Point Cardboard Boat Race. These six schools were given the task of creating a boat from scratch using only cardboard, duct tape, and plastic bags.
With their boats ready to race, the UConn ECE high schools teams were set to compete against each other. The winner of the UConn ECE division would partake in a race against the Avery Point students. The race consisted of a lap around two buoys and back to the shore of the Avery Point’s Waterfront beach. Student Tommy McDaniel from Montville High School took the big win by beating both the high school teams and the Avery Point teams.
We would like to thank Montville High School, Waterford High School, South Windsor High School, Manchester High School, Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut, and University High School of Science and Engineering for taking part of this great event!
